I was relieved that I was not down there with all those sharks, even if they were reef sharks and unlikely to attack. Seeing the dark shadows in the water made me afraid. After some contemplation, I decided to get out of the safety of the boat and take the plunge. After all how often do I get the chance to swim with sharks? The tour guide took me over to the sharks. The water was murky. I could see the sharks below me, not too far away. My fear had mostly gone.
The tour guide eventually let go of my arm and I was alone with all these sharks. It was quite fascinating if not a bit scary. I knew I couldn’t stand, otherwise I’d step on a shark and it would probably bite me. I was trying to figure a way out of this. The only way out was to reverse backwards. I reversed out and popped my head up. Everyone was in the boat and even the tour guide had gotten back in the boat. I thought how on earth can he abandon me like that with all those sharks? Surely that is irresponsible of him. God isn’t like that, ready to feed you to the sharks and abandon you.
Fear can be terrifying, even paralysing. The devil knows that if he can inflict fear into us, incapacitating us we will not be able to function effectively or not even at all. God is not the one who instils fear into us, but helps us to overcome it through faith. Faith is not the absence of fear, but faith has the power to counteract all of the devil’s schemes. God is more powerful than any scheme of the evil one. Through our faith and trust in God, He will help us overcome all fear.
We need not fear for God is near. Put your trust in Him.
Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
