Just under halfway to his uncle’s land, he came across a place where he would rest called Luz. As he rested his head for the night, he had a dream and in that dream, he received a promise; the same promise that was given to his father Isaac and his grandfather Abraham. The place where Jacob had rested and received the dream and promise was renamed to ‘Bethel’ meaning ‘house of God’.
When we pursue God, we uncover the dreams that He has given us and the promises that He had made to us. As we place ourselves in resting in His grace and mercy, we unwrap more and more of the gifts that God has given us.
Sometimes God calls us into a place of uncertainty and hardship and we start to think “Lord, you have given me your promises, why is this not looking like you have promised me?”
God knew the hardship that Jacob was going to face. He knew the opposition that Jacob would encounter. At Bethel, the Lord spoke to Jacob specifically in Genesis 28:15: “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
Your situation may seem bleak and nothing like the promises God has given you. Take heart. Even though your physical circumstance may not reflect the promise, God’s promises are eternal. Take the rest that you need in HIS house and in HIS presence that you can visit any time, any place. God will not leave you in the desert, dream freely and hold unswervingly to the promises he has for you.
