Traditionally in Israel, children were named after their fathers or family members (see Luke 1:61-62) however, God speaks to Joseph, Mary's fiancé, in a dream about their son and tells him that his baby's name will be: Jesus and He will save people from their sins. Did the neighbours comment on this bold name? Did murmurs start spreading? Not to mention the prophecies! Did they know the impact that this young boy will have not just in their country but the world? Joseph and Mary obeyed and named their baby - Jesus.
Now after 2000 years have passed, we can celebrate the birth of Jesus. Not only celebrate him, but worship Him, the Savior, the atonement of our sins. He came to be the door of salvation for all of us. His name is Jesus, Immanuel - God with us. Thank you Jesus.
Matthew 1:20-23 NIV
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-which means, "God with us."
