The dictionary defines the word “know” as to perceive, be aware or understand clearly and with certainty. We claim to know about many things. For instance, I have been recently planning a trip to France and Italy. I know where these countries are on the map, I know what languages are spoken, I know what the local food is like, and I know some history and facts about the governments, politics, etc. However, as much as I think I know about these countries, I have actually never been to either one of them. Often times, we say that we know a superstar, from Twitter or Instagram, we know what they have been up to, we know their family background and history, we may even know their likes and dislikes, but have we actually met the person for real?
The same thing can be said about God. We may know many things about God, we know from the Bible that He created the world, that He sent His Son, Jesus, into the world, we know that Jesus was crucified on the cross, we know that He has done many miraculous things. However, have we really met Him? Have we personally experienced Him?
To know France or Italy ‘for real’ means that I will have to get on a plane and take a journey there. To know someone ‘for real’ means that we will have to have experiences with the person through conversations, face-to-face encounters, going through situations with the person, etc.
How well can we say that we know God? How can we further our experiences with/of Him?
1 John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him
