Could you imagine the looks on the faces of the disciples when Jesus told the disciples not to turn away the people and to feed the 5000 plus women and children? All up there would probably have been more than 10,000 mouths to feed. Of course Jesus wanted to fulfil their needs. These people had followed him because they had seen the miracles that he had performed on the sick. They must have been hungry and tired after following him, possibly for the whole day.
Jesus asked Philip where they would get supplies. Of course Jesus knew. He was testing Philip just as God tests our faith. We probably would have made a similar reply as Philip, “Eight months wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” Few of us would have the faith of the little boy, who offered his 5 loaves and 2 fish for everyone to share. Jesus instructed the disciples to have everyone sit down. If we were the disciples we would probably have thought that Jesus had lost the plot. However, the disciples did exactly what Jesus had instructed. Every man, woman and child had their fill. There were even leftovers, 12 baskets full.
We may think we know best. A lot of the times we confine God by our own human standards, but God cannot be contained in a small box. He is God, anything is possible in Him if we believe and are obedient. Have faith like the little boy. Through his willingness, he helped feed the 5000. Are you willing to take that leap of faith?
John 6:12-13
When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
