For many summers, I was unbeatable and I grew proud. One summer, a new kid on the block challenges me to a game of marbles and he was adamant he could beat me; the reigning champion. I responded proudly and in the attempt to assure the others that I was not intimidated, I promised that I’d give away my prized marble and stones if he were to beat me.
Alas, I lose and for days, I could not get over the fact I lose. I was just an eight year old boy then1 but that was my first understanding on how pride could shame a person or a boy, in my case. This lesson carries to adulthood and I’m always reminded that pride always goes before destruction.
Save yourself the pain, the shame and the heartache of pride, heed the wisdom that God have laid out for us in the Bible. A momentarily praise is not worth anything if it is followed by a shameful defeat. Seek humility and let’s be reminded that we ought to not boast in ourselves but in the God who humbles the proud and lift up the humble.
Proverbs 16:18
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
