So why am I’m not as cooperative when it comes to spiritual stillness. I question, retaliate, worry and wonder why I should just rest and not do anything.
We listen to doctors, police, nurses or people with authority because we deem they have more knowledge or power than us so why we treat the Maker of the Universe differently and refuse to rest under the assurance of His Words? Are we overestimating our own capabilities?
Elijah thought he alone was doing God’s work but he was unaware of the 7,000 others who hadn’t bowed to Baal (1 King 19: 18). Elijah only learned the truth of how God did not forsake him when he was well rested. The voice of the Lord came to him in a ‘still small voice” (1 King 19:12). Had Elijah not rested and received God’s provision of care, he wouldn’t have been able to hear the still voice and be able to discern that his fear had consume him.
Choose to rest at the assurance of God’s promises; it may be the greatest strength we could cultivate in our Christian faith and by doing so, God can keep our spiritual vision clear. He will enable us to discern better than allow our fear to consume us.
1 Kings 19: 4 – 5
But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
