In real life, parents discipline (and punish if necessary) their children to help them develop a better character, so that they can grow into responsible adults that will be useful in the society.
So does our loving Heavenly Father. He disciplines those whom He loves (that's us), to help us grow a proper character, that can be useful in God's hand and helpful towards others.
So, if you're placed in an uncomfortable situation, which is totally outside your comfort zone, there might be something that God wants you to learn. Here are few examples of God's discipline:
- If you are an impatient person who demands everything fast, He will give you no choice but to wait...and wait for something that you desire. And you'll have no peace until u develop patience and surrender to God.
- If you are an unforgiving person, God might surround you with annoying and inconsiderate people that wrong you. And you'll have no peace until you learn to forgive them.
- If you fear something, you might come face to face with your fear, and that will cause your faith to grow.
- If you are so proud of yourself and your accomplishments, you might fail, loose what you've accomplished or meet some people who continuously look down on you and don't appreciate you. In the end, you'll learn about humility, and become a humble person, just like our Lord Jesus is humble.
Let's not forget that the Lord who disciplines us is also the One who loves us the most and gave Himself for us, suffered and died for our sake. He disciplines us because we are His children.
Hebrews 12:6
because the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes everyone He accepts as a son.
