Thought it is a book often disregarded in the Bible, Obadiah has a message. It reiterates the message in the book of Proverb 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
The book of Obadiah reminds us that pride will be our downfall and that we are not in control of our situations, God is.
We may think we are in control, that we have prestige or power of success. We have a status or title at work or a beautiful “home on the heights” with an impressive view. We may hobnob with people who are “someone” and soar through life feeling high and good enough to touch the stars (Obadiah 4) but Obadiah reminds us that we are not in control – God is. If our pride gets in the way, heed the warning that God has given us - “pride goes before destruction.”
Pride is a ticking time bomb waiting for destruction to take place.
Obadiah 1: 3-4
The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks, and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’ Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars from there I will bring you down,”
declares the Lord.
