The dictionary defines a voyage as a long journey to a foreign or distant place, especially by sea. We do not often hear the term voyage used much nowadays, probably because the of modern day convenience of flying. Perhaps the only time we hear it is when someone says “Bon voyage” wishing the traveller a safe and enjoyable journey.
In the Bible Paul's journey to Rome was neither enjoyable nor safe.
Luke, a friend of Paul’s writes a detailed eyewitness account of the events that occurred during their voyage to Rome (Acts 27). For starters Paul was a prisoner on a boat full of convicts and soldiers. However, He was allowed two friends with him, Luke and Aristarchus. A huge storm arose. God gave Paul insight to what course was best, but Julius, the centurion in charge listened to the human wisdom of the owner of the boat and the captain.
This makes sense since they would be seasoned fishermen and Paul was not. They had fear, but Paul had wisdom and courage from God. He advised them not to leave the harbour, but as he was outvoted by everyone else. They sailed on because the harbour was not good in winter. Even though they were sailing into more trouble, God was with them.
We too, often seek advice from other well-meaning people and friends, but do we seek God’s counsel? Do we look at the circumstances around us or do we look to God?
Acts 27:22-25
But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed. Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul….’ So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.
